Breeding Basics

Updated: Sep 18, 2021

Breeding Basics:

  • They lay up to 8 eggs but on average 5 eggs.

  • Incubation takes 3 weeks with the male and female taking turns to incubate.

  • Make sure you have a good sized nest box measuring at least 12 by 12 inches.

  • The nesting material: wood shavings or wood chips (some people use shredded paper, but i've found wood shavings is the best material if you've got an outside aviary).

  • Make sure during the breeding season that you give them plenty of greens and have a mineral block and cuttlefish up in their cage also I would advise putting egg food out for them as this gives them the vital minerals and vitamins for the development of the eggs.

  • After two clutches of eggs it is best to block up the nest box (so the female can have some rest) for 2 weeks minimum.

  • Block up the nest box during the winter as it is colder and the eggs are not likely to hatch.
