How To Hand Rear a Cockatiel.

What you need when hand rearing a cockatiel

  • Baby hand rearing food (this is specifically designed for feeding and rearing baby cockatiels).

  • Bowl to mix the hand rearing food in.

  • Syringes with small spouts. (the long spouts can damage the babies mouth).

  • Tea towel.

  • Hot water.

Feeding time!!!!

Newly hatched - 2 weeks: every 2 hours around the clock.

2-3 weeks: every 3 hours around the clock.

3-4 weeks: every 4 hours around the clock.

4-5 weeks: every 5 hours from 6am-12 (midnight).

5-6 weeks: three times a day.

6 weeks onwards (till they are on sold food): 2 times a day.


The best time to take them out the nest for Hand Rearing is at 5 weeks when they are fully feathered.



How to hand rear a cockatiel.


  • First put the right amount of food in your bowl (2-3 teaspoons).

  • Next you boil the kettle and add the hot water.

  • Then you mix it all together till it is a porridge like consistency.

  • Next you put the mixture into the syringe.

  • Then put the tea towel on your lap and rest the baby bird on the tea towel.

  • Then gently, little bit at a time squeeze the food into the birds mouth. Do this till the birds crop is full. (Don't give the baby bird to much food at a time, just give them a little bit).
